Why do three different lists give Leo three different stones?

Search “Leo birthstone” and you will meet ruby, onyx, and peridot — all from reputable sources, all answering different questions. The ruby answer is modern astrology's reading: the Sun-ruled fire sign paired with red corundum, the gem of authority. The onyx answer comes from the historical zodiac-gem tables compiled in George Frederick Kunz's era, which assigned onyx to Leo. The peridot answer is the calendar's: any Leo born in August claims August's stone. Only one of the three is exact — the month split — because a birthday is a fact and a tradition is a tradition.

The root of all three lists is older than any of them.
