History & Lore of Ruby

Called the "king of precious stones" in Sanskrit, ruby has been treasured in India for over two thousand years. Burmese warriors believed a ruby implanted beneath the skin made them invincible in battle. In medieval Europe, ruby adorned the crowns of kings, signifying wealth and protection.

The stone of passionate vitality, ruby is said to fuel ambition, courage, and the fire of love. Worn against the heart, it is traditionally believed to attract devotion and ward off fear.

Symbolism: Passion, vitality, and noble courage.

How to Care for Ruby

Ruby is second only to diamond in hardness (9 Mohs), making it ideal for everyday rings and bracelets. Clean with warm soapy water, steam, or an ultrasonic cleaner — though the latter should be avoided if the stone shows visible fractures. Its color is stable and will not fade.

  • Mohs hardness: 9
  • Suitable for everyday wear depending on setting and lifestyle.
  • Store separately to avoid contact with harder stones.
