Ruby

July's birthstone is ruby — red corundum, Mohs 9 with excellent toughness and no cleavage, the durable heart of the calendar's hardest family (every other corundum color is a sapphire). Its red runs from raspberry to the pigeon's blood crimson that sets auction records, its name is the Sanskrit ratnaraj — king of gems — and it has been July's stone on both the traditional and modern lists without interruption. One honest market note: about most rubies on the market are heat-treated, a stable and accepted practice; the unheated fine reds command the extreme premiums.

Ruby is corundum painted by chromium — the same element that colors alexandrite and emerald — growing in marble and basalt across Myanmar's Mogok Valley, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and East Africa. Mogok's stones set the standard: red with a soft blue fluorescence that glows in daylight. The crystal habit is the barrel-shaped hexagon shared with sapphire, and fine rough is genuinely scarce: clean, saturated ruby above two carats is one of the rarest mainstream gem encounters. The legendary material is dramatic: Burmese warriors, by old account, wore rubies into battle believing them invincibility talismans — some traditions held the stone had to touch the skin, others that it was implanted beneath it; either way, ruby entered history as the gem of courage.

The king-of-gems title is literal history, not marketing: ratnaraj appears in Sanskrit court poetry centuries before the modern list existed. The stone's meaning stack is the deepest red in jewelry — passion and vitality in the romantic register, courage and protection in the warrior register, and in the modern crystal tradition, energy restored: the stone for the person whose fire has burned low. July babies arrive as Cancer (through July 22) or Leo (from July 23), and ruby flatters both — the heart-centered sign and the sun-ruled one. Its July wedding-gift logic is circular and perfect: the ruby anniversary (the 40th) exists because the stone already meant enduring love.

Ruby is the gem with the most accomplished imitations because the prize is biggest. The honest history: the first commercially successful lab-grown gem was synthetic ruby, in 1902 — flame-fusion corundum that is chemically real ruby and now so cheap it fills watch bearings; under magnification it confesses with curved growth striations and round gas bubbles that natural crystals never show. The lookalike family (red spinel, red garnet, red tourmaline, glass) separates on hardness — corundum scratches them all — and on the pleochroism a gemologist reads between directions. Two buying rules protect July money: a certificate for any important stone, and skepticism toward big-clean-vivid rubies at friendly prices — nature simply does not make them often, and the trade that does is selling disclosure, or the lack of it.

The July birthday gets the calendar's statement stone — a daily-wear ring in a hard red that outlives settings. The 40th wedding anniversary is ruby's official year (and the 15th by some modern lists).
