Raw Crystal Buying Guide: How to Spot Authentic Gemstones
The market is flooded with glass, plastic, and synthetic imitations. Learn the five tests that distinguish authentic raw crystals from fakes, and what to ask before you buy.

Five tests separate authentic raw crystals from the flood of glass, plastic, and dyed imitations: temperature (real stone warms slowly), hardness (quartz scratches glass), inclusions (natural fingerprints inside), weight (real density), and color (natural zoning, never neon-uniform). Below: each test in detail, the fake types you will actually meet, and the three questions that make sellers honest.
Test one: temperature. Natural gemstones are dense and conduct heat away from your skin, so they feel cool and take ten-plus seconds to warm in a closed hand. Glass and plastic are insulators — they reach skin temperature almost instantly. This is the fastest field test and needs nothing but your palm.
Test two: hardness. Every mineral has a Mohs rating, and the practical ladder is memorizable: quartz family (amethyst, citrine, clear, rose) at 7 scratches window glass (5.5); steel knife at 6.5 scratches feldspar but not quartz; glass fakes fail to scratch anything. Drag a discreet corner across a scrap of glass — a real amethyst leaves a line, glass leaves powder.
Test three: inclusions — the fingerprint argument. Natural stones grew over millions of years, so they contain evidence: tiny crystal ghosts, veils, growth zoning, feathers. Under a 10x loupe or a phone macro lens, a stone with zero internal features at a low price is glass or lab-grown. The one exception: genuinely flawless natural gems exist only at gem-auction prices.
Test four: weight (specific gravity). Real stones are denser than the glass they impersonate: garnet 3.5-4.3, quartz 2.65, glass about 2.5. Same-sized beads side by side — the garnet feels conspicuously heavier. Sellers who forbid you from holding the stone are answering the test for you.
Test five: color honesty. Natural color zones and shifts: amethyst lightens toward crystal tips, aquamarine has a sea-glass softness rather than electric blue, peridot is yellowish-green and never teal. Neon saturation is the dye tell — bright fuchsia, cyan, and lime crystals essentially do not exist in nature.

The three questions that make sellers honest, in order: What is the Mohs hardness and the mineral name? What is the country of origin? Is it treated in any way, in writing? Sellers with real material answer all three without flinching — disclosure is cheaper than refunds. Sellers who answer with mood lighting and energy talk are selling neither.
A note on synthetic honesty: lab-grown amethyst or sapphire is chemically the real mineral, and legitimately fine to buy — the fraud is only when it is sold as natural. The crystal is real but the color is not — dyed quartz sold as natural citrine or bright pink crystals are the most common example. Dye pools in cracks and color looks flat under a loupe. Always ask for treatment disclosure in writing.
Is lab-grown the same as fake?
No — lab-grown is the real mineral grown above ground, chemically identical. It becomes fraud only when sold as natural. Honest sellers label synthetic material as synthetic, at synthetic prices.
