Different birthstones need different care. A diamond can handle steam cleaning; an opal will crack if you look at it wrong. This guide breaks down the safest cleaning method for every stone in your collection.
Hard stones (Mohs 7+): amethyst, citrine, aquamarine, sapphire, ruby, diamond. These can handle warm soapy water, a soft brush, and even ultrasonic cleaners (with caution). Rinse well and dry with a lint-free cloth.
Medium stones (Mohs 6–7): garnet, peridot, tanzanite. Use warm soapy water and a soft brush only. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, which can shake stones loose from their settings over time.
Soft or porous stones (Mohs <6): opal, pearl, turquoise, moonstone. Never soak these. Wipe gently with a damp cloth. Avoid chemicals, heat, and prolonged sunlight — opals can dehydrate and crack, pearls can yellow.
For metal care, a polishing cloth restores gold and silver in seconds. For stubborn tarnish on silver, a paste of baking soda and water works wonders. Store pieces separately to prevent harder stones from scratching softer ones.
Frequently asked.
How do you clean a crystal bead necklace or bracelet?
Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap, soak the strand for two to three minutes, then swish gently and brush between the beads with a soft toothbrush. Rinse under lukewarm running water and pat dry with a microfiber cloth, then lay the strand flat until fully dry — elastic cords weaken when stored damp. Skip ultrasonic cleaners entirely: they loosen bead settings and stress the stringing material.
