History & Lore of Turquoise

Turquoise is one of the oldest known gemstones — ancient Egyptians mined it in the Sinai over 5,000 years ago, and it adorns the burial mask of Tutankhamun. Across the Americas, Native American peoples have set turquoise in silver for centuries, considering it a fragment of fallen sky.

A stone of protection and friendship, turquoise is said to change color when danger approaches and to bless partnerships with longevity. Giving turquoise is traditionally a pledge of trust, and receiving it a sign of being watched over.

Symbolism: Good fortune, protection, and enduring friendship.

How to Care for Turquoise

Turquoise is porous and relatively soft (5–6 Mohs), so it absorbs oils, perfumes, and cosmetics — which can darken or discolor it over time. Always apply lotions before putting turquoise on, and never soak or ultrasonic-clean. Wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth only. Some "stabilized" turquoise is resin-treated for durability.

  • Suitable for everyday wear depending on setting and lifestyle.
  • Store separately to avoid contact with harder stones.
