April's birthstone is diamond — Mohs 10, the hardest natural material on Earth, and the only birthstone that headlines both the durability and the gift-value charts. Named from the Greek adamas, unconquerable, it has been April's stone on the modern list since 1912. Two honest footnotes belong up front: hardness is not indestructibility (diamond has perfect cleavage and can chip at a sharp blow), and April's budget reality is why the list quietly sanctions alternatives — white topaz and clear quartz give the icy April look at a fraction of the price.
